VOSS-4-UC allows for the creation of lists or groups of devices to which references can be created so that such a specific group of devices is available for selection when a lower hierarchy level is provisioned. This is particularly useful when an administrator at a hierarchy level manages clustered devices, in other words more than one of the same device type at the same level.
For example, a customer administrator may add a number of devices to a group and create a reference to it so that a particular site that is created in the hierarchy under the customer may be provisioned with reference to this device group.
Network Device Lists (NDL) are best suited for a customer administrator who manages clusters of devices containing similar types. A specific group of devices in such a list can be made available to a particular site by using a specific Network Device List Reference (NDLR).
In the case where NDLs are not configured, lower level hierarchies can still be set up, but the device selection logic will then be to resolve device references to the first device found when traversing the hierarchy tree upwards.
For example, if a customer has network devices at its own hierarchy level (say CUCM instances called cucm1, cucm2, cucm3), and also has sites site1 and site2 lower on its hierarchy, then two NDLs can be created; one for each site and with each list containing distinct device instances. Without such lists, references to device instances by site1 and site2 cannot be differentiated, because they all belong to the customer further up in the hierarchy. With the use of NDL and NDLR, the customer can ensure each site below it references distinct device instances.
Another example where a NDL is best suited would be where the same provisioning task is required on more than one instance of the same network device, for example creating a route pattern on multiple CUCMs pointing to the same site. A NDL list lookup can then be created to single out only these device instances.
To create a Network Device List Reference (NDLR) for use at a particular hierarchy, a Network Device List must be available at a higher hierarchy level. Note that only one NDLR should be created at any given hierarchy node.
The created reference is available on the hierarchy to be selected when a Site is created.
