Network Device Selection

VOSS-4-UC allows for the creation of lists or groups of devices to which references can be created so that such a specific group of devices is available for selection when a lower hierarchy level is provisioned. This is particularly useful when an administrator at a hierarchy level manages clustered devices, in other words more than one of the same device type at the same level.

For example, a customer administrator may add a number of devices to a group and create a reference to it so that a particular site that is created in the hierarchy under the customer may be provisioned with reference to this device group.

Network Device Lists (NDL) are best suited for a customer administrator who manages clusters of devices containing similar types. A specific group of devices in such a list can be made available to a particular site by using a specific Network Device List Reference (NDLR).

In the case where NDLs are not configured, lower level hierarchies can still be set up, but the device selection logic will then be to resolve device references to the first device found when traversing the hierarchy tree upwards.

For example, if a customer has network devices at its own hierarchy level (say CUCM instances called cucm1, cucm2, cucm3), and also has sites site1 and site2 lower on its hierarchy, then two NDLs can be created; one for each site and with each list containing distinct device instances. Without such lists, references to device instances by site1 and site2 cannot be differentiated, because they all belong to the customer further up in the hierarchy. With the use of NDL and NDLR, the customer can ensure each site below it references distinct device instances.

Another example where a NDL is best suited would be where the same provisioning task is required on more than one instance of the same network device, for example creating a route pattern on multiple CUCMs pointing to the same site. A NDL list lookup can then be created to single out only these device instances.

Create a Network Device List

Create a Network Device List (NDL) to group together devices available from the current hierarchy. NDLs are typically added at the Customer level.

  1. Choose the target hierarchy.
  2. Choose Network Administration > Network Device Selection > Network Device Lists to open the list view.
  3. Click Add on the button bar to open the input form.
  4. Enter a list Name and Description.
  5. In the Devices tab, for each required device to belong to the list:
    1. Click Add on the Device Type group.
    2. Choose the Device Type.
    3. Choose the particular Device Instance of the Device Type. For example if the Device Type is Unified CM, then the Device Instance list shows all Unified CM devices that are available at the current hierarchy. If these device instances have the same name and port, then the available list shows the hierarchy level of the instance in order to distinguish them. If the same device from the same level is added more than once, only the first device of a device type will be used for provisioning.
  6. Click Save on the button bar to add the network device list.

The created list is available to use when a Network Device List Reference is created at a hierarchy level below the current hierarchy.
